Professional Skills for Creative Industries

The aim of this short course is to develop skills in research and archive navigation, with an emphasis on creative use of archives. The course explores how the archives can be a repository of seed ideas for creative output, and how artefacts and assets in the archive can be harvested creatively. In short, the course is about utilising the material of a digital archive for the purpose of narrative construction and development and to present the findings in a narrative form – written, visual and/or audio.

In this course, you will:

  • Gain a general overview of what an archive is and what is in the archives;
  • Explore how the archives can be a repository of seed ideas for creative output;
  • Learn how to navigate the boundaries between research and creative sources, and explore this relationship for creative practitioners;
  • Learn how to use files, documents, photos and props as a source of idea generation and how to use the archive to construct a story;
  • Research a narrative project through archival sources and design a narrative fieldwork project.

You will be assessed through project and presentation work.
