The “Neomateria” project promotes innovation, sustainability and creativity through materials. It provides expertise and space for artists and makers to explore and experiment with the properties of new bio-based and waste materials.
Delivered by Materfad, Barcelona Materials Center, the Consortium for Trade, Crafts and Fashion of Catalonia CCAM (Barcelona) and Creative Futures Academy at NCAD, “Neomateria” includes expert workshops, a panel discussion and an exhibition held over 3 days in Dublin during Design Week.
The series of events will focus on dissemination, collaboration and inclusion of industry specialists, scientists, makers, academics and international experts with potential to transform dialogue and enact change beyond the studio or lab and ultimately instigate sectoral changes.
Neomateria Expert Workshops
Learn about the properties of human hair and biomaterials and how they could be used as an alternative to synthetic materials, in our two special Neomateria workshops hosted over 3 half-days in National College of Art & Design (NCAD). Since 2019, the Neomateria Talks have nurtured a rich exchange among creators, including artisans, makers, and designers from various countries.
In Dublin, as part of Irish Design Week 2023, amidst the presence of workshop experts, we will delve into the perspectives of the event’s promoters and curators, represented by Materfad (Barcelona), CFA at NCAD and DCCI along with industry leaders. Our discussions will revolve around the themes explored in the Neomateria exhibition and workshops: ‘BioMaterials to Wear?’ and ‘Rethinking human hair.’
This significant discussion will be led by Robert D. Thompson, Scientific Director of Materfad, Barcelona and will tap into the invaluable insights of experts to shed light on the future possibilities of new materials.
This talk will take place in-person in the Harry Clarke Theatre, NCAD, from 5-6.15pm on Thursday 16th November, followed by drinks and a tour of the Neomateria exhibition. Register HERE

Neomateria Showcase Event
A Neomateria showcase exhibition will be open to the public in NCAD. The exhibition will include a mix of materials from the workshops held in Dublin and previous Neomateria project curated by Materfad, Barcelona Materials Center.
