This six-week blended programme co-created with Design Skillnet introduces learners to the fundamental principles of service design.
Service designers craft solutions for intricate systemic and societal challenges, crafting experiences tailored to meet the diverse needs of multiple users and stakeholders.
Our Professional Certificate equips students with the core principles of Service Design, offering both theoretical insights and practical experience with service design methodologies and tools.
The programme actively facilitates mobility within the college and across Creative Futures Academy and provides articulation into a variety of postgraduate programmes and career pathways.
6 weeks, 50% online and 50% in person
The programme seeks to empower students from fields such as design, business, sociology, systems thinking, education, banking, technology and the public sector to shape the services of the future through design thinking and doing.
Service Design is a new and rapidly expanding discipline. This module aims to improve awareness of the issues that determine the usability of a designed service through the lenses of People, Data and Systems. Learners will analyse how Service Design has evolved, and establish where the current ‘state of the art’ lies in relation to their own area of interest within the discipline. They will be introduced to the fundamental principles and processes of the discipline, including Human Centred Design, enabling them to integrate Service Design practices in their own work outside the course. Industry speakers will address topics and challenges faced by service design practitioners in the real world, such as integrating Service Design within organisations, operating within constraints, and identifying cutting edge approaches and opportunities within Service Design.
NCAD Service Design graduates have gone on to secure positions within the public and private sectors in the fields of consultancy, healthcare, innovation, and information technology. Graduates are well placed to take up employment in the following roles: Service Design, UX, Experience Design, CX and Strategic Design.
This certification will be assessed through a group assignment and presentation.

“…the exchange that we had as a class allowed me to reflect on the role of design within the world and also on the role I want to take in it”
“Service Design provides a space for incorporating many disciplines and skillsets into practical problem solving. The opportunity to study Service Design at NCAD was like finding the missing jigsaw puzzle piece”
“My work and research is all about uncovering actionable insights, whilst inspiring and helping clients or partners, to do better through design and strategy. In practice, much of my work centres on creating new ways to look at problems and to find innovative solutions.”
Sarah Heffernan‘s Alumni Story
“I take everything I’ve learned and experienced across the variety of roles I’ve had into my work day-to-day and I believe I’m better designer for having this design squiggle of a career path”
